The Grand Canyon of the east coast

Once we got to the top of Linville Falls, a hiker told us that it is considered by the locals as the Grand Canyon of the east coast. Looking down from the top, taking it all in, we quickly saw the comparison.

Our favorite pictures - the reward at the end of a long hike.

This is quite an adventure for the dogs, but they're loving it!

So the weather may not have been the most ideal for hiking, but we weren't gonna let a little rain stop us. Or mud for that matter.

Now that was some walk.

Our first ice sighting!

While in the mountains we noticed this awesome ice formation on the side of the rocks where water was trickling down. We were so fascinated we pulled over to take pictures with it!

Mmmmm, sprucey!

Ooooo!

Leaving Ashville, NC...

1,000 miles!

Making our way to the Blue Ridge Parkway

On our way to Ashville, NC where we'll start the Blue Ridge Parkway. Can't wait to breathe that fresh mountain air!

The dogs love looking out the window.

When they're not sleeping of course!

Our first full meal while on the road. Who says you have to eat greasy burgers and potato chips on road trips! Courtesy of our rice cooker, propane burner and the local Fresh Market we enjoyed a meal of steamed white rice, stir fried bean sprouts and tuna tataki - all from our Motel 6 room!

The cave of wonders

Our plan of action after leaving Alabama was to seize the opportunity of being near the Appalachian Mountains and spend some time in them on our way north. We decided to stop off in Chattanooga, TN to check out their touristy attraction Ruby Falls - Billy had already seen it before and insisted I see it too since we both admire waterfalls so much. Then we're planning on jumping on Blue Ridge Parkway to see how many other waterfalls we can find along the way.

Getting out of the car every now and again to stretch our legs and take in the scenery is so very nice.

Although it was foggy, gray, and drizzly the landscapes were still breathtaking.

Ruby Falls is an underground waterfall, which you get to by going down an elevator into a cave. It felt pretty touristy, 'cause you have a guide the whole way and you go in groups - oh, not to mention you even get your picture taken, like they do in theme parks! But regardless, it was worth it. As one of the seven natural wonders of the U.S. it's pretty amazing.

And here is the main event! Oooooooo! Ahhhhhhhh!

(Don't you just love that neon colored lighting!)

Clearly we are in awe of it's majestic beauty.

And here is my photographic proof of life in the caverns, which the tour guide so falsely claimed to the group did not exist. LIES!!
